We apologize for the late notice, but we were just given the opportunity to have Horsemanship Merit Badge offered as additional program during free time at camp.  This will not take the place of any merit badges that Scouts are currently signed up for but will happen during free time.  Cost is $50.00 per Scout.  Parents must sign a waiver for their Scout to participate. Please sign and complete the waiver and then print a copy to bring to camp.  Please register below by Friday, June 10th if you would like to participate in this program activity.  Class will be held on Tuesday, June 14th during free time.

Waiver (must be signed and turned in on the first day of camp)

From Charles Bright at White Horse Quarterhorses in Perkinston, MS:

We are happy to be offering instruction on the Horsemanship Merit Badge to campers from Salmen Scout Reservation.  The horseback riding experience could be described as Horseback 101.  We will cover all topics and activities necessary for the Scouts to complete the Horsemanship Merit Badge.  Our emphasis will be on teaching the proper methods used in handling horses.

We will offer what we believe to be a very safe and outstanding horseback riding facility.  Our horses are maintained in the highest standard of care.  They have a constant supply of fresh hay and receive regular feedings of horse feed.  A parasite control is administered in their feed daily.  They always have access to a salt/protein block and fresh water.

Our horses will be carefully picked to make sure they are suitable for novice riders.  Each horse is ridden by our staff to ensure they are appropriate for our use in instruction.  Records on each horse are kept showing all problems and accidents.  A formal training program will be in place for horseback riding and understood by all staff.  Instructions for care, feeding, and maintaining horses is in place.  We use the services of Dr. Ryan Byrd and Dr. Jeff Peterman of Mobile Vet Services LLC, and our farrier service is supplied by Colton Redmond.  As horse lovers, we take pride in maintaining our horses in the best way known so that they are both healthy and happy!
