Southeast Louisiana CouncilAmerican Red Cross Programs

Disasters can be frightening for adults — and even more so for children. That’s why the American Red Cross is teaching kids how to prevent and stay safe from emergencies through our free Youth Preparedness programs.   Our national programs include Prepare with Pedro (Grades K-2), The Pillowcase Project (Grades 3-5) and Hands Only CPR (Ages 7 and up).

Prepare with Pedro

  • This program is for grades K-2, and is presented by reading a storybook that follows Pedro the Penguin as he learns how to “Be Prepared and Take Action” during an emergency.
  • Pedro storybooks include hazards such as home fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
  • COVID-19: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve postponed in-person presentations, but instead, offer this presentation virtually using such platforms as ZOOM, Webex or TEAMS.  This presentation takes approximately 30 minutes and is interactive.

The Pillowcase Project –

  • This program is for grades 3-5, and teaches students about personal and household preparedness, local hazards, and coping skills.
  • Trained Red Cross presenters teach children about home fire safety, a local hazard common in their area (such as hurricanes, tornadoes, winter storms, etc.), and coping skills.
  • Children are encouraged to share their skills at home by creating an emergency plan and kit with adults in their household.
  • COVID-19: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve postponed in-person presentations, but instead, offer this presentation virtually using such platforms as ZOOM, Webex or TEAMS.  This presentation takes approximately 1 hour and is interactive.

Hands Only CPR

  • The course teaches untrained bystanders how to perform hands-only CPR.  Having more citizen bystanders trained in this simple skill can help save lives by putting more cardiac arrest victims within a few steps of lifesaving assistance.
  • Due to COVID, we are currently offering this virtually using ZOOM, Webex or TEAMS.  This presentation is interactive where the participants are on camera practicing this technique with presenter feedback after watching a video segment.
  • The hands-only skill session lasts approximately 30 minutes. Participants learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 (or the local emergency number), and give continuous chest compressions.
  • CPR training certification is not provided through this course.

If you are interested in scheduling any of the above presentations or if you have questions about any of the programs, please contact me back.  Also, please feel free to forward this email to any of your Pack leaders with your endorsement.

Thanks so much,

Jodi
